Women's Jiu-Jitsu

In 2002, Balance Studios started Philadelphia’s first women’s only Jiu-Jitsu program. The Migliarese Brothers, founders of Balance, are dedicated to sharing the authentic Helio Gracie self defense system for women.

The program is designed to be safe, effective and comprehensible.

Jiu-Jitsu Self Defense focuses on getting away from an attacker intelligently and with as little energy as possible. This program is a blend of strength training, yoga, Brazilian jiu-jitsu self defense, and striking. The focus is on escaping dangerous situations on the street. This is not a sport but a means of survival.

Both women’s only and co-ed classes are available at Balance Studios.

What our students say?

As a woman moving to a new city, I wanted to take a self defense class of some sort. I went to Balance Studios in Fishtown (HQ) and tried a beginner class and was obsessed from the start!! Phil and Rick are the owners and they are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. All of the instructors are super experienced and helpful as well. As a woman I was intimidated at first, but after my first session they do an awesome job of making any new student feel comfortable. After a few months of training I could feel myself improving and it’s one of the most gratifying feelings! The studio is clean, and Phil, Rick, and all instructors do a great job of making sure everyone training is respectful and practicing with proper technique. Highly recommend!!!!

3 months in and loving it so far. As a woman learning self defense is essential! The instructors take time to break down technique & make you feel comfortable to ensure you learn the moves. Students are respectful & staff is professional. If you’re apprehensive or intimidated I say give it a try and remove doubts. I wish I started sooner. Team Balance!
